Florida Commissioner's Office.

The Calusa Indians made this land their home thousands of years ago, utilizing the favorable climate and abundant natural resources to thrive and prosper.

Ever since then, tThe beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel have attracted people for the same reasons. The result is a rich history on full display in the area's many historic inns, galleries, museums, and in one can't-miss example, the winter estates of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford.

Year round and seasonal residents coexist with a vibrant business community oriented to the steady stream of island visitors.

In 1885, inventor Thomas Alva Edison was cruising Florida's west coast and stopped to visit Fort Myers. He soon bought 13 acres along the Caloosahatchee River in town, and built a home and laboratory, "Seminole Lodge", as a winter retreat.

As early as 1935, the residents of Fort Myers Beach began discussing incorporation.  In 1995 a referendum passed to incorporate Estero Island as a means to engage citizens of the island in the preservation of their own small town character. After legislation was enacted by the State of Florida, on December 31, 1995 the Town of Fort Myers Beach was born.
