More About that $25 Billion

The five biggest banks in America have signed a $26 billion deal that will let them off with a slap on the wrist for fraudulently foreclosing on homes in the last couple of years. This settlement will only affect a small number of short sales.

The agreement resolves certain violations of civil law based on mortgage loan servicing activities. The agreement does not prevent state and federal authorities from pursuing criminal enforcement actions related to this or other conduct by the servicers.

Banks apparently have come to the realization that it’s best for them to cut their losses through these measures rather than pursue foreclosures that can be drawn out and leave a home vacant for months afterward, incurring carrying costs (and incurring damage done to vacant properties).
